This course prepares you for initial Educational Staff Associate Initial Certification as a School Nurse. Content includes the role of the school nurse within the context of the school and society, growth and development, assessment and screening tools, school law, and legal, ethical, and professional responsibilities of the role.
Learn practical skills at the hands of Nationally Board Certified School Nurses, discuss common scenarios in online message boards, and learn Scope of Practice. Assignments and videos are posted in a virtual classroom to allow participants more flexibility to "learn the ropes" without sacrificing quality or content.
This course is approved by the Professional Educator Standards Board (PESB) for meeting the requirements for initial certification as a School Nurse.
Prerequisite for this ESA course: Must hold a valid state of Washington Registered Nurse License, and BSN is strongly preferred. Please refer to the OSPI website for additional information.

Director of Health Services
Tacoma Public School Districts
Most recently, Hobbs has served as director of health services for Tacoma Public Schools and is responsible for coordinating and supervising the delivery of health services to students within the district, including clinical support consultation, policy procedure and development, initiative implementation, and more. She also oversees and supports 58 RNs and LPNs who are assigned to 58 sites across Tacoma.

Clinical Coordinator
Karen Smith is the Clinical Coordinator for health services with Tacoma Public Schools. She is responsible for training School Nurses, providing Professional Development, and guiding nurses in clinical support consultation. Karen has been a nurse for more than 35 years and has a passion for preparing others for the important role of School Nursing.
